The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. The mission of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) is to recognize and honor the academically talented students of the United States.

From approximately 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program, only about 16,000 were named Semifinalists. From the 16,000 Semifinalists, 15,000 students were acknowledged as distinguished Finalist and 7,500 students were named winners of National Merit Scholarships!
