Beijing No. 101 High School's Golden Sail Orchestra (GSO) and the Howard County High Schools Gifted and Talented Orchestra (HSGTO) jointly present a concert of Chinese and Western Music orchestral favorites. This concert is a prime example of the HCPSS vision and mission of excellence and enriching diversity.
This joint concern is part of an ongoing partnership HCPSS enjoys with various school systems around the globe.
One of the top high school orchestras in China, GSO has performed at the Sydney Opera House and Vienna's Musikverein, and has collaborated with orchestras around the world, including North Amerca, Austria, Germany, Japan, Singapore, and elsewhere. Renowned Chinese conductor En Shao leads their program which includes selections from the concert suites of The Mermaid and The Whitehaired, two well-known contemporary Chinese ballets, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, and Liszt's Les Préludes.
HSGTO is an auditioned orchestra of 104 students from all 12 high schools in Howard County, Maryland. The group performed at Carnegie Hall in 2004 and 2007, the Midwest Clinic in 2009, and at the Eastern Division Conference of MENC in 2005. Under the direction of Benjamin Denne and Tim Reinhardt, they present a diverse program that includes Rossini's best-known William Tell Overture.
To conclude, the two countries' young artists will jointly perform Pulling up Reed Catkins, a Chinese song, and Buckaroo Holiday and Hoedown from Copland's Rodeo.
