What is Inclusion Week?
Inclusion week is an annual event sponsored by the Inclusive Schools Network (ISN) that is held each year during the first full week in December. (December 7-11, 2020)Since its inception in 2001, Inclusive Schools Week has celebrated the progress that schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to an increasingly diverse student population, including students who are marginalized due to disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language preference, and other factors. The Week also provides an important opportunity for educators, students and parents to discuss what else needs to be done in order to ensure that their schools continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children.

What is inclusion?
Inclusion means that all people, regardless of their abilities, disabilities, or health care needs, have the right to:

  • Be respected and appreciated as valuable members of their communities
  • Participate in recreational activities in neighborhood settings
  • Work at jobs in the community that pay a competitive wage and have careers that use their capacities to the fullest
  • Receive a formal and complete education

How can I promote inclusion?
Promoting Inclusion could include any of the following:

  • Treating every person as an individual
  • Not making assumptions about individuals’ backgrounds or circumstances
  • Accepting and understanding everyone’s differences
  • Creating a welcoming environment for everyone
  • Introducing yourself to a new person
  • Holding yourself and others accountable for inclusion
