After our first week of Distance Learning and Virtual Classrooms, RHHS administrators and teachers want to commend many and most of our students who followed school rules and the new norms that we are adopting in this digital learning environment.
Students and families are probably adjusting to some new routines and new habits to include checking Canvas Announcements and Canvas Calendars, participating appropriately in Google Meet class sessions, and submitting assignments online every week.
Teachers have asked students to mute their microphones and sign-in as present in Chat Boxes and Discussion Boards. For everyone who is following these new norms, we recognize you for demonstrating Hawk PRIDE.
Some students have chosen to disrupt these learning opportunities for our teachers and our fellow students. Misuse of technology, inappropriate/offensive/threatening comments, misrepresentation of identity, and/or disruptive participants (invited or uninvited) in virtual class sessions will not be tolerated. Disciplinary referrals are being shared immediately with administrators and consequences will result in loss of technology access, which will also result in a student's inability to participate in virtual learning activities; assignments will be provided to parents and the student will be expected to complete the school work outside of the school virtual week. Further incidents may result in a school suspension.
Some students are sharing log-in information, which violates the student rights of every student in River Hill High School and places them at risk of having to witness disruptive behaviors from students who do not attend RHHS. We are also notifying Principals in other HCPSS high schools for disciplinary action when students "trespass" in RHHS virtual classes. This communication is reciprocal and we have notified parents and disciplined several of our students who have made the poor choice to disrupt the learning at other schools.
We expect the BEST at RHHS from each and every one of our students. Now that we have addressed these behaviors as first offenses, we expect that we will move forward with a safe online school community. Parents, we also thank you for helping us teach our students about their digital citizenship responsibilities in a virtual world and we certainly invite you to observe our class meet sessions to make sure your child is participating appropriately.
