We have met with students who requested Chinese for next school year and explained the course details. We have scheduled our students into Chinese I, Chinese II and Chinese III during periods 1,2, and 3 and into Chinese IV AP during 6th period. We are very fortunate that Mrs. Hui Liang, our current Chinese teacher, has been selected to teach the synchronous learning course. The digital classrooms will be housed at Marriotts Ridge HIgh School and Centennial High School and our students will have access to a computer lab/classroom at River Hill High School so that they can attend these classes live.
The HCPSS Course Catalog explains how synchronous learning is set-up:
Digital Education Courses
In support of the HCPSS Vision 2018 strategic plan, the school system offers selected courses in a variety of digital formats. These courses, marked with the "n" icon through out this catalog, have been approved by the MSDE and Howard County Public Schools as a digital education option for the upcoming school year. Because the approved list of courses is updated every year, students must maintain contact with their school counselors to assure that courses selected are still accepted by the MSDE for the subsequent school year. Digital education is designed to provide supplemental access to courses and does not provide a full-time virtual school option. All digital education courses are facilitated and taught by highly qualified teachers. Digital Education courses are not designed to be “stand-alone” or independent study.
The current digital education option formats are:
• Blended course instruction – students work with an online teacher and access instructional materials through both online coursework and face-to-face instruction. The number of face-to-face meetings will vary depending on the course.
• Fully online course instruction – students work with an online teacher and access the majority of instructional materials through online coursework. There are no face-to-face meetings but the student may meet with the online teacher through phone, web or video conference as needed.
• Synchronous video course instruction – students access real-time instruction with a teacher using synchronous video technology. A video camera is set up in the primary classroom to allow for real-time video streaming of instruction to remote sites.
In addition, we are also able to offer US History AP, which has never been offered in prior years at our school, to RHHS students who will be enrolled in the synchronous video course.
