I turned my calendar to the month of December, and I decided to slow down long enough to reflect on how River Hill High School continues to grow better and better every day, in every way.  We wrapped up Quarter 1 with a successful fall sports season.  We are proud of our students as athletes and we want to recognize Boys' Cross-Country, who won the state championship.  Girls' Cross-Country and Volleyball also competed proudly at the state level.  We are also proud of our students as scholars.  917 students earned Honor Roll recognition; the 225 students who earned a 4.0 were awarded a burger certificate from one of our business partners, Eggspectation.  Please remind your student to pick up his/her award and maybe take the opportunity for the whole family to enjoy a dinner together to celebrate.  We also want to acknowledge the National Honor Society pillars of character, service, leadership, and scholarship as 101 new members were tapped and inducted into National Honor Society. Students continue to excel in performing arts and we are looking forward to watching one of our very own RHHS students perform in the Army's National Marching Band.  Many students have earned the distinguished honor of performing at the state level in GT performance groups.  Other students are participating in math competitions, business opportunities, research, robotics development, writing contests, and leadership initiatives.  And last, but not least, our Seniors are finishing up applications and waiting anxiously for their next decisions for their future.

As I shared with the NHS membership, 2015-16 is a milestone year for River Hill High School as we celebrate 20 years of excellence.  Our motto is that we are getting better and better every day in every way.  Our students and staff demonstrate the qualities of RHHS academic success, character, leadership, and service.  These pillars bring RHHS PRIDE to life.  High school students today stand at a critical milestone in their own lives.  They master hard work, strive for success, and develop character along the way.  Before each of them, stretches a new horizon with endless possibilities.  Perhaps good things come to those who wait, but the best things come to those who seize the moment and make it their own. There is no simple recipe for success but here are 10 easy tips:

  • Believe while others may doubt.
  • Lead while others may follow.
  • Decide while others may delay.
  • Begin while others may wait.
  • Work while others may wish.
  • Serve while others may take.
  • Listen while others may talk.
  • Smile while others may frown.
  • Construct while others may criticize.
  • Persist while others may quit.

In closing, here is a thought from Ralph Waldo Emerson, “We find in life exactly what we put into it.”  We are proud of staff and students who put their best in everything they do.  It’s a great day to be a Hawk!
