Lee Preston, the author of Archaeology in Howard County and Beyond, spent the day Tuesday, September 1st sharing his archaeological experiences with world history students at River Hill High School. Mr. Preston taught for thirty-five years in Howard County schools and currently teaches archaeology at The Johns Hopkins University. He captivated the students with his in-depth knowledge of the past 10,000 years of human habitation in Howard County and beyond. In addition to his expertise, Mr. Preston shared boxes of artifacts for students to handle and analyze. These pieces included Paleolithic stone arrowheads, blades and axes as well as the tools and materials that early stoneworkers used to fashion the blades and weapons that allowed them to thrive in the Americas. Finally, he encouraged any interested students to investigate the Archaeological Society of Maryland and he informed them of the opportunities to participate in real archaeological fieldwork in Maryland.
