Worldwide, some 775 million adults lack mininum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women; 60.7 million are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out. On Tuesday, September 8, 2015, the English department is celebrating International Literacy Day. Students in all English classes will have the opportunity to read a book of their own choice in celebration of their own literacy. We will join the communities around the globe to act as a united voice in raising awareness for those who cannot read or write. Out aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities, and societies.
