In recognition of the ancient African tradition of the dual roles of the human spirit, the Council of Elders established the Sankofa Award to recognize graduates who exemplify outstanding qualities of excellence.  This award is named for the Adinkra symbol, Sankofa, which means "The wisdom in learning from the past in building the future."  Each year this award is presented to two students, one black male and one black female, who have demonstrated high academic performance, leadership, service, and citizenship in the community.  This year, Laurence Crandon was a nominee finalist and Ogenna Umeozulu received the Sankofa Award.
