River Hill High School’s

Gifted and Talented Program

Congratulations to Gwynn Marsh-Armstrong on the publication of her research in the Journal of Neuromuscular Diseases. In the GT Intern/Mentor Program, Gywnn worked with a team of molecular biologists at the Kennedy Krieger Muscular Disorder Lab. She researched the function of a specific gene within the Myostatin gene, a gene essential to the process of muscular regeneration. Gwynn assisted her mentor in conducting the transformations of plasmids without the gene of interest into bacteria and other organisms. Additionally, Gwynn helped to take care of the bacteria cultures and to analyze the results. The potential implications of this research for people with diseases like Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, in addition to for normal aging people suffering from natural muscular deterioration, is staggering.

What do Running Brook Elementary School, Goddard Space Center, and Johns Hopkins Medical School have in common? They are all sites that host our very own RHHS GT Intern/Mentor students!  These RHHS football players, school journalists and artists have taken their learning to the next level. Are you interested in having your student apply to the Independent Research Program or the Intern/Mentor Program?  Perhaps the Independent Research Program is a better fit for your student? Many students take IR in their sophomore/junior year and then move into IM their Senior year. Both courses offer unique opportunities for students to learn about research and to complete a research project based on a topic of their choice.  IR students stay in school and work with an advisor in their field of interest as well as the G/T Resource Teacher.  Mentor students leave the building for a 5 hour/week on site experience.  Both classes must complete a final research project.  Enrollment is limited and based on application information, teacher recommendations and transcripts.

GT Information Night Handouts and FAQ’s are now available on the RHHS website.  Applications can be found in the G/T Resource Room (141), the Student Services Center and online at www2.hcpss.org/rhhs/gtprogram.htm.  Applications will be accepted starting Monday, January 4th the deadline is Friday, January 29.
